We Love Diarrhea

This is Lola, my partner Mark's dog. One of the things that I love about dogs is that every dog we meet has something to teach us. Lola has taught me that no matter how smart or well-behaved a dog is, it is unfair to lock a dog in a truck with a steaming hot rotisserie chicken and expect the dog not to eat the chicken. Unfortunately for Lola (and for us), that volume of rotisserie chicken was too much for Lola, and she suffered from diarrhea throughout that night and the following day.

Acute or sudden onset diarrhea is one of the more common ailments that dogs will come to our clinic for. While sometimes we can identify the cause of the diarrhea (like Lola and the chicken), we often aren't able to determine the underlying cause.

Most dogs that present with acute diarrhea will have frequent watery brown stools that may have blood or mucous present. These dogs are usually still bright and happy and hungry despite suffering from diarrhea.

For dogs with diarrhea lasting for two days or less that are still feeling bright, happy and hungry, I often recommend feeding small frequent meals of a bland diet for four or five days - my bland diet is usually an equal volume of cooked white rice and low-fat cottage cheese, boiled chicken breast or extra-lean ground beef. I recommend limiting fat intake in dogs with acute diarrhea, so avoid higher fat meats such as chicken thighs or pork. Rice is an ideal carbohydrate to use as it is highly digestible and relatively energy dense, and has some compounds that can decrease the amount of fluid lost in the diarrhea.

For these dogs, we may want to consider bloodwork to look for an underlying cause of the diarrhea, or a short course of antibiotics to treat the diarrhea. While many cases of diarrhea will respond to a bland diet, diarrhea can also be a clinical sign of a larger and more complicated disease process such as parvovirus, inflammatory bowel disease or liver disease, so for this reason it is important to work through cases that do not respond to supportive care.

Lola recovered from her episode of diarrhea uneventfully, and we learned a valuable lesson about separating her from the groceries. If your dog has diarrhea and you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at 867-633-5700.

We love hearing from you guys. But sometimes what you're saying to us doesn't make any sense! Like "my Diarrhea Planet record has two b-sides." What? How can that even happen? But it turns out, some of them really DO have two b-sides! It's magic, we suppose. So we went through our whole stock and pulled out these double-b-sided "I'm Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams" LPs just in case anybody's interested in them. We like to call them the "I'm Rich But Only On The B-Side" records. Like our "Hell Bent" pack of bent-up LPs, these are NOT for collectors. However, they're a perfect fit for those of you who need spare records to craft into bowls and clocks and whatnot, or those of you who want to prank your friends (the label says A-side but plays B-side - what a confusing time you'll have together!), or just reaaaaaaallly love "Babyhead." We get it. That song's great!

We keep our goats on a fairly consistent diet. We hay our own field, so our hay quality is pretty regular. The grain is measured and each goat fed according to their needs. Goats that are in milk receive more grain than wethers, bucks, etc. Our goats are given access to grass hay at all times. If one of our goats gets scours, we usually know why. Sometimes in the spring, when they are first released on pasture, a few will get diarrhea even if I limit their time exposure. It depends on how wet the season is, or how lush the grass grows that year.

I have an 8wk old Nigerian dwarf with diarrhea (what looks like pee then a little pile of poo). What can I do to treat this? She is eating hay, bottle feed, eating grass and temp is alway between 102 and 103.

We would typically recommend Bounce Back to help with the diarrhea, but since she is not eating that is serious. She needs more help than just an electrolyte. We recommend giving your vet a call. She probably needs to be seen.

My 12 yo Alpine goat developed very watery diarrhea about 5 days ago. Stool sample sent to vet was neg for parasites. His appetite has improved and is acting more energetic. I give him fresh/clean water, grass hay with s couple handfuls alfalfa, minerals, amonium chloride and probiotics. He doesn't have access to pasture. Not sure why he has diarrhea?!

I have 3 adult goats and one has had green smelly diarrhea, I have separated her from the other goats and am giving her hay. I've read here about baking soda but what is the best method ... in a dish? added to feed? added to water? Thanks

I have a 6 month old buck that constantly has diarrhea and I have to medicate him with prescriptions from the vet. Would any of your products help to assist and possibly prevent this from happening to begin with? Thank you.

Hello I just got a 2 week old mini pigyma goat the lady has her on whole milk 2 Oz 4 times a day she has some diarrhea going on but I was told she has scours could you plz tell me any advice she is a tiny girl and we love her so much

AlcoholAlcoholic beverages and food products containing alcohol can cause vomiting, diarrhea, decreased coordination, central nervous system depression, difficulty breathing, tremors, abnormal blood acidity, coma and even death. Under no circumstances should your pet be given any alcohol. If you suspect that your pet has ingested alcohol, contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately.

Chocolate, Coffee and CaffeineThese products all contain substances called methylxanthines, which are found in cacao seeds, the fruit of the plant used to make coffee, and in the nuts of an extract used in some sodas. When ingested by pets, methylxanthines can cause vomiting and diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death. Note that darker chocolate is more dangerous than milk chocolate. White chocolate has the lowest level of methylxanthines, while baking chocolate contains the highest.

Coconut and Coconut OilWhen ingested in small amounts, coconut and coconut-based products are not likely to cause serious harm to your pet. The flesh and milk of fresh coconuts do contain oils that may cause stomach upset, loose stools or diarrhea. Because of this, we encourage you to use caution when offering your pets these foods. Coconut water is high in potassium and should not be given to your pet.

Milk and DairyBecause pets do not possess significant amounts of lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk), milk and other dairy-based products cause them diarrhea or other digestive upset.

Salt and Salty Snack FoodsLarge amounts of salt can produce excessive thirst and urination, or even sodium ion poisoning in pets. Signs that your pet may have eaten too many salty foods include vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, elevated body temperature, seizures and even death. As such, we encourage you to avoid feeding salt-heavy snacks like potato chips, pretzels, and salted popcorn to your pets.

You might also consider trying a bland diet of boiled rice and chicken that is easy to digest as a temporary measure. If you do want to offer a treat, try ones made with plain yogurt and pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling, just 100% pumpkin) in equal parts. Blend the pumpkin and yogurt, then spoon the mix into an ice cube tray and freeze. The yogurt probiotics will help settle her stomach, while pumpkin will regulate her stools, correcting both hard stools and diarrhea.

We make NutriChomps edible dog chews using real ingredients like chicken meat, milk, and peanut butter. We load them up with dietary fiber to support digestive health, and they are vitamin and mineral enriched. We skip the artificial flavors and colors, relying on the real flavors from genuine ingredients dogs love.

For some people, lovesickness goes beyond butterflies: It may also induce physical effects, such as heart palpitations, shortness of breath, stomach pain, loss of sleep, and depression, all which may persist and prevent you from functioning normally. Also known as limerence, this condition is marked by extreme attraction to another, as well as an obsessive need to have feelings returned.

Even the levels of ivermectin for approved human uses can interact with other medications, like blood-thinners. You can also overdose on ivermectin, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hypotension (low blood pressure), allergic reactions (itching and hives), dizziness, ataxia (problems with balance), seizures, coma and even death.

General Symptoms of Seasonal Flu:-Fever or feeling feverish/chills-Cough-Sore throat-Runny or stuffy nose-Muscle or body aches-Headaches-Fatigue-Vomiting and diarrhea

The best way to protect yourself and those you love from COVID-19 is to get vaccinated as soon as possible. All individuals over the age of 5 are eligible and studies continue to show that the COVID-19 vaccines and boosters provide significant protection against severe illness, hospitalization and death. Learn more about vaccination against seasonal flu and COVID-19 on our website.

Gastrointestinal illnesses affect a person's stomach and intestines, and can cause diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. The following gastrointestinal illnesses have been associated with recreational water activities.

Crypto has become one of the most common causes of water recreation diarrhea illness in the United States. The germ is found in people's stool. It's highly resistant to chlorine disinfection and can survive in a pool for as long as ten days. Swallowing contaminated water is how people are often infected. To help stop the spread of Crypto, people with diarrhea shouldn't go swimming. Learn more at Crypto, CDC.
